Forklift Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is supplied by huge industrial batteries which need to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety measures must be followed when somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is important to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area should be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the station should not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Do not permit things such as lighters or matches to be used when an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
